Happy Turkey Day - again!

I know it's officially a week away from Thanksgiving, but we are having our luncheon at work tomorrow and of course I signed up to bring the dessert!  I love to bake, but can't cook for nothin'!  :)

Here is my cake that I am taking to work:

I hope you all enjoy him!  He is made from vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream.  His feathers are made of half fondant, half gumpaste and cut out with a maple leaf cookie cutter.  I then put them on cookie sticks and painted this in ascending fall colors.  I am VERY pleased with how he turned out!
Can't wait to eat him tomorrow!   :)

Phineas and Ferb

My son's 9th birthday was a couple days ago and his party is tomorrow.  When I asked him what type of cake he wanted me to make him, he immediately answered "Perry the Platypus".  For those that don't have kids or don't have to be bombarded daily by their cartoons, Perry the Platypus is on a show called Phineas and Ferb.  This show involves 2 brothers who have a pet platypus who is a secret agent.
I know... a little deep for kids right?  But the brothers are always inventing new things and trying to have a great summer vacation.  Kindof educational.

Anyhow, I went online and started pulling up pics of Perry and came across quite a few.  I had already imagined carving a platypus out of cake when Cole decided he only wanted Perry's face.  Well, that's easy.  So here he is - Perry the Platypus (Agent P).

Owls, Owls and more Owls

Everyone that knows me or has ever been in my home, knows that the one thing that I collect and seem to really love are owls.  I'm not exactly sure when this obsession started, but yes, it is a little out of control.  My husband asks each time that a new owl comes into the house, "Isn't about time to move onto something else?"

I am actually starting to run out of places to sit them now, so maybe the answer to that question is Yes.   BUT, not so fast.  I can just make them out of cake, right?  Then they don't really stick around but I can take a picture of them and keep them forever!

Just recently I decided to play a little one weekend.  Of course I ended up with an owl cake.  Here is "Owlivia".  She was so cute, I just couldn't bear to eat any of her - but I gave her to my mom and the ladies at our office said she was mighty tasty!!

I'm so proud of her... hopefully another one to follow soon!  :)

Spongebob Squarepants!

I am a Spongebob fan, I have 2 boys who both like Spongebob and even my husband likes the cartoon too.  "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?"  Once you hear that, you are hooked... I don't care what age you are.

Luckily for me, I got the opportunity to make a Spongebob cake for a dear friend's son.  He is a huge Spongebob fan and looks like his little sister will be too.

Here is what I was able to make for him.

My almost 9 year old told me later that his tie needed to be a bit bigger, but I think he looks pretty darn good for the first Spongebob.  I hear that he tasted really good too!

He was made with vanilla cake and vanilla buttercream, covered in fondant decorations.

Cake Pops for the Cure!

On May 14th, I found out that my mom had just been diagnosed with breast cancer.  A very scary time in my life, didn't know what to do or what to think.  Many things went through my  mind, all of the what if's.  We waited for a couple weeks before telling my kids, as we didn't want to scare them for nothing.... if it was nothing.
We found out shortly that she would have to go through Chemotherapy treatments as well as have a mastectomy.  She has opted for a double mastectomy so the chances of it coming back are 0%.

Right  now she is currently into her second round of chemo and so far so good.  The lump is shrinking like it should and hopefully soon we'll say goodbye to breast cancer altogether.
Thank you to all of our friends and family who have been so supportive.

I love you MOM!!  :-)

I am selling these cake pops for $2.00 a piece and all proceeds (100%) will go toward the Susan G Komen foundation in my mom's name.  Will be doing a bake sale soon too with tons of different goodies for sale and again, 100% of proceeds will again go toward the Cure.

Father's Day!

This post is way late... but Happy Father's Day!!  Here's a cake that I made for someone I work with... I love the shirt & tie theme for father's day.... such a masculine thing.

More to come.... I've had alot on my plate - please read my next post.

Gamers ... this ones for you!

My son plays a PS3... I have never played an Xbox, never really seen one- so when I had an order for an Xbox 360 controller cake, I had to consult with an expert.  He's 12!  :)
I think that this one looks pretty darn good if you ask me... especially for never doing a cake like this before!

Baseball time in Tennessee

Had great fun making these cute little baseball cupcakes for an old friend... Unfortunately his son's game got rained out but I'm sure the team still enjoyed the sweets!!  :)

Baby Shower time...

My latest cake was for a baby shower... this one put me a little out of my element because I had to use rice krispy treats for parts of it.  Tedious work, but it came out wonderfully.  I was really impressed with myself on this one.

Valentine's Day

It's always fun to celebrate Valentine's Day... this year was extra fun for me! I had a couple of different orders that kept me busy all weekend long.  They were all super fun though.

First was an order for 120 mini cupcakes - red velvet with cream cheese icing and heart sprinkles.  Cute!

Next I had a birthday/Valentine's Day cake to do for a friend's husband.  Again, red velvet with cream cheese icing - mmmmmm, yummy!

And last but not least a couple dozen cookies decorated up like those little message hearts... so cute.  Plus I had a couple left over for me - good stuff!

I am halfway through my final cake class as well.  Tuesday night will be week 3 of 4.  I'll post some of my work in another post.
Have a great day everyone... hope your Valentine's Day was wonderful and full of love!

New projects coming up...

I'm very excited to let everyone know I received my Cricut Cake machine last night.  I can't wait to play with it and decorate lots of desserts with endless possibilities! For those that don't know what this is, visit this website for more information.

I also am proud to say that I am going to finally take my last cake class next month.  Even though I am already working with fondant and gum paste, I don't have any formal training on those elements.  I will, however, after February!

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my blog.  I'll continue to post my latest desserts - lots of things coming up this weekend!!  :-)

Happy New Year...

and how can you celebrate the New Year without champagne??  Well, this year I tried a new recipe - champagne mini cupcakes.  They were different.  Not your regular cupcake.  The texture was a little more dense than a regular cupcake and the icing was a bit sweeter - I know... how can the icing be sweeter??  But it was.  It had just that hint of champagne in it and a bit of the alcoholish aftertaste.

Of course for the kids that were at the party, they got the non alcoholic version, just in chocolate!  They were good as well, just your classic yellow sponge with chocolate buttercream.  You can never go wrong with that!
